MAKING ART IN THE ASPEN GROVE

Students begin this course at Vesper Meadow by receiving an introduction to many facets of the aspen tree from Jeanine Moy, manager of the Vesper Meadow Education Program. Next students receive instruction from Deb Van Poolen about drawing and painting the landscape outdoors and in the studio. Deb will demonstrate and teach students how to use a tool called the “viewfinder” as an aid to drawing. Students will sketch and photograph the aspen grove at Vesper Meadow and then work further on their drawings and/or paintings at the Green Springs Clearing.  Students will choose to create a final piece in pencil, watercolor or acrylic. Deb’s instruction in basic composition will apply to all three mediums. The focus of this course will be for students to create simple compositions which communicate the uplifting feel of an abundantly golden aspen grove. See Deb’s watercolor painting of aspen on the left. Class size is limited to 12 participants.

LEARNING & DRAWING TREES

As students observe various conifer tree species at the Green Springs Clearing property in their natural habitat, students will receive information about the distinguishing characteristics of the trees.  Students will be taught how to use the tool called a “viewfinder” as an aid in drawing overall tree shapes, as well as their needles and pine cones. Students will create a fine art drawing based on one tree species they choose to study in depth and draw in detail.
